AN OPEN LETTER TO MURPHY OIL CORPORATION (Petroleum, not soap!)

My wife has been searching for a job for 7 months.  She has applied to your company several times, and she keeps getting rejected. Your company claims "You did not pass the assessment."
Tell me, what's more important:  Someone who can pass a test filled with opinions and/or hypothetical situations , or someone who is experienced as a cashier in a fast paced environment -- Someone who can DO THE JOB?
A cashier is NOT going to be scheduling meetings.  A cashier is not going to be scheduling vacations.  A cashier is not going to need a 50,000 word vocabulary.  A cashier IS going to need to know how to make change.  A cashier will need to know how to operate the register and POS terminal.  A cashier will need to know how to deal with irate customers and proper procedures in case of a robbery.  A cashier needs HONESTY, Integrity, understanding, and willingness to do the job.
But for some reason, you folks seem to think that your "Assessment" is so important.  The thing is, circumstances are never has you have them.  The circumstances require that a cashier be able to think on his/her feet.  A Cashier needs to be able to foresee trouble and head it off.
THAT is what my wife offers.  And that is what you folks are rejecting because she "doesn't pass the assessment."
I submit to you that your assessment process is UNFAIR AND BIASED.
Make your judgements from interviews, not standardized tests.  People do not fit into a standardized mold.  What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another!
I may not be able to get you to interview my wife for a cashier position.  I may not be able to get you to discard your assessment tests.   Of course, if you're looking for bilingual, that should be clearly stated.
Oh, you want my business?  "SORRY, YOU DID NOT PASS THE ASSESSMENT!"

The above may seem harsh.  But it's this blogger's opinion of "Assessments", pre-employment tests.  This aren't background checks.  These aren't reference checks.  These tests are unnecessary, a hassle, and a complete waste of time.  They SHOULD be ILLEGAL.  We should BOYCOTT Murphy Oil...AS I SEE IT!
